Western Desert Egypt

Known in ancient Egypt as the "red land," the Western Desert served as a natural shield protecting the Pharaohs' kingdom from western threats. Covering approximately 700,000 square kilometers, it accounts for two-thirds of Egypt's total land area and stretches from the Mediterranean Sea in the north to Sudan in the south, and westward to the Libyan border. The desert's landscape is defined by three remarkable geographical zones: the Qattara Depression, a vast lowland of around 15,000 square kilometers filled with salt lakes and marshes that sits mostly below sea level; the Great Sand Sea, one of the largest sand accumulations on earth, with dunes rising over 110 meters high; and the Gilf Kebir Plateau, a sweeping sandstone plateau comparable in size to Switzerland, marked by dramatic cliffs, valleys, and hidden wadis. Scattered across this immense and largely uninhabited landscape are six oases, Siwa, Bahariya, Fayoum, Farafra, Dakhla, and Kharga, which serve as the only permanent settlements in the region and remain the heart of life, culture, and history in the Western Desert.
